Cotton farmers would sell this oil to automakers to use as machine lubricant. But they soon realized they could add it to Olive Oil because it wouldn’t change the color and was easy to hide. It was a great way to cut the olive oil and make a good profit. Because of this, Italy banned American olive oil in 1883.
